Dating back to 1453, the creeper-clad Talbot Inn has welcomed many famous guests during its long life (Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton apparently dropped anchor here) and it is currently enjoying a new lease of life as part of the enterprising Merchant Inns group. The stunning new restaurant with its impressive copper ceiling and glass conservatory overlooks the garden.
Locally sourced produce is used to telling effect for a range of modern dishes embracing gastro-pub classics and more innovative modern ideas: free-range chicken and ham pie or wild boar sausages with savoy cabbage, bacon and mash share the billing with pan-roasted Cornish scallops with pea and mint risotto or grilled black bream with creamed leeks, crushed new potatoes and mustard sauce.
On Saturdays, there are special 'deli boards' loaded with farm produce sold at Ripley Farmers' Market, while the choice of desserts could run to apricot and vanilla crème brûlée or warm chocolate tart with raspberry compote.
The Talbot has a delightful garden for al fresco pleasures, and its reputation for fine hospitality extends to stylish accommodation for those wanting to stay a while.
